FRECCLES - Friends of Eccles Station

A series of fifty short trips from Eccles Station, compiled by Jim Rayner

Jim Rayner has compiled this guide to fifty walks which can be made by using the train from Eccles station. They are intended mainly to be pleasurable rather than challenging. Most of the walks can be fitted into a morning, an afternoon or an early evening in summer.

Although maps are helpful for the walks they are not an utter necessity as the author has tried to make the instructions absolutely clear as to which routes to take. However he would recommend strongly that you take a map on the countryside and hill walks.

A 'category one' rail trip costs no more than the cost of the Greater Manchester Rail Ranger ticket for the day (£4 in January 2009). A 'category two' rail trip costs no more than twice the cost of a Greater Manchester Rail Ranger day ticket. And so on for category three etc.

Sometimes the whole cost of the day including travel, admission and meals is given in the same terms so a 'category four' total trip out would cost as much as four rail ranger tickets in total.

Downloading, printing and copying of individual walks for personal use is permitted (each chapter is a separate pdf file). Copyright is retained by the author. A printed version of this guide is now available for £4 from the author, who may be contacted at james.rayner456@btinternet.com.
